¿Quién nos dice la verdad? / Who is telling you the truth?

NOTA PRELIMINAR / NOTE

It has been almost 10 years, since August 2011 when I first started to write regularly here at Aporrea following the closure of Vheadline.com where I used to write since 2002, that I have been contemplating on writing in both Spanish and English simultaneously in one document. I have not done so until now, mainly because of three factors, 1) lack of time, 2) I hate translating, and 3) I don’t like to rewrite the same thing twice. Nonetheless, I have finally done so, I have written (below) two texts on the same subject matter and within the same context, one in Spanish (first) and one in English (second), and I hope that Aporrea will indeed publish it. I also hope that it will be useful for a broader audience. Thank you.

Ver: https://www.aporrea.org/internacionales/n365612.html

¿Ah?

No entiendo.

Ver: https://www.france24.com/es/am%C3%A9rica-latina/20210121-maduro-crisis-migratoria-colombia-onu-acnur

ARTICLE

I will try to be brief.

I live in Venezuela and have lived here permanently since 2010, having first come to Venezuela in the 1970s. I am also married to a Venezuelan, we met almost 50 years ago and are still together, and very happily so.

Well, every day I almost fall flabbergasted to the floor in contortions and convulsions due to being witness to the ever increasing number and size of the lies generated from within the present Venezuela State (since 2013).

This is unbelievable.

I just read an article published in Aporrea, titled, in Spanish, "United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reports a record number of displaced peoples worldwide, surpassing 80 million."

See: https://www.aporrea.org/internacionales/n365612.html

Within the article they state that according to the UN, somewhere in the vicinity of 4 million people have left Venezuela recently, however, they do not specify exactly in which time period, though I assume it must be somewhat recently, say perhaps in the last 2 or 3 years.

Though it is impossible to know the true figures accurately, this figure seems reasonably accurate, at least to those of us who live here in Venezuela who are constant witnesses to the ever increasing number of Venezuelans leaving the country very day since 2014- 2015. Other UN sources (see below) have reported over 5 million, and personally, based on my experiences and observations, I would estimate the number to be between 5 and 6 million (2015- 2020), whilst people are still presently leaving Venezuela (in 2021) because the situation here has not improved at all, rather, it has gone from bad to worse with no redeeming light seen at the end of a very dark tunnel filled with endless and unrelenting misery for the vast majority (at least 80% I would say).

Now, in the same article, they also say that the Venezuelan State implies that those figures are false and have been altered to create media pressure against Venezuela.

What?

How can that be?

How can the Venezuelan state negate or ignore the reality of the human tragedy which they themselves have created and say that figures are being altered to discredit them when they are the direct cause of the problem?

(For example, the minimum wage and pensions here in Venezuela, which fall under the direct jurisdiction and control of the State, went down from over $300/month in 2013 to less than $2/month over the following few years, this being one of the main reasons for people leaving this country en masse since at least 2014 - 2015.)

Nonetheless, I decided to investigate to see if it were true that the Venezuelan State really considers these figures (from the UN for example) to have been altered, and, yes, incredibly, I did find a news article that confirms this incredibly unbelievable fact.

Wow!

I found a France 24 news article in Spanish from January 2021 that states that the present Venezuelan head of State said the figure is 600,000.

See: https://www.france24.com/es/am%C3%A9rica-latina/20210121-maduro-crisis-migratoria-colombia-onu-acnur

What?

What the heck!

While the article says that the present Venezuelan head of State says that the figure is 600,000, the same article also states that the figures recorded by the UN so far are around 5.45 million.

600,000 is a total lie!

The depth of the lies generated from within the Venezuelan State never ceases to amaze me.

I think that every Venezuelan, unless they suffer from some kind on mental disorder or some kind of behavioural problem, know that 600.000 is a complete and utter lie.

For example, on my street there are about 30 families, 15 of which I know (the others I do not know), and from amongst these families at least 10 people have left in the last 2 or 3 years, so, extrapolating, this would mean that 20 people of every 30 families would have left Venezuela in recent years. Now, supposing that Venezuela has about 8 million families --- which seems reasonable (4 people per family) ---, this would mean that about 5.33 million Venezuelans would have left the country in recent years, and this would certainly coincide much better with the figures generated by the UN of 5.45 million than the figure of 600,000 recently declared by the Venezuelan head of State.

¿Right?

So, who is lying to us?

The UN?

Or the present Venezuelan State which has a proven reputation for being a pathological liar?

(I can prove it.)

Who is telling you the truth?
