Black propaganda claims Chavez orders storage of bio-chemical weapons
President Hugo Chávez Frias is refusing to stand down and insists that his government is regaining control of Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) where some 280 managers have now been fired after abandoning their executive positions in a political battle to remove the country's President. Chavez Frias says he will use the opportunity to downsize bloated management at the State-owned oil corporation and that many of those who have been on strike for the last four weeks have already been replaced with workers who a dedicated to getting Venezuela back on its feet again.
"It's a struggle between patriots and traitors to save Venezuela," Chavez said during his weekly 'Alo Presidente' talk show broadcast from a gasoline distribution center in center-west Caraobo State as thousands of anti-government demonstrators thronged through streets in the capital, Caracas, to demand his immediate resignation.
Rabid anti-Chavist politicians, businessmen and labor leaders have been accusing the President of a plethora of spurious misdeeds ranging from personally ordering executions to harboring "weapons of mass destruction" for "best buddies Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein." In an emailed effort at black propaganda this weekend, it was claimed that Chavez had personally ordered the storage of bio-chemical weapons in Los Teques and that he was prepared to use them if he is backed into a corner.
Those, however, who are increasingly being backed into corners of their own making are the high-profile leaders of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry (Fedecamaras) and trade union mafia boss Carlos Ortega who himself refused to submit to democratization within the umbrella Confederation of Venezuelan Trade Unions (CTV).
Ortega has been quoted this weekend as saying that (dwindling) opposition groupings must "fight to the death" against "Dictator Chavez" while the latter is proving more statesman-like in his refusal to prove the opposition lie by clamping down on the constitutional rebels.
Opposition spokesmen are calling on Venezuelans to step-up acts of civil disobedience and to refuse to pay income and other taxes until President Hugo Chávez Frias is forced from office. Significantly, with more than 80% of Venezuela's 23.4 million populatioon well below the UN poverty line, it is predominantly affluent opposition businessmen who have been feeling the effects of relatively low-level income taxes after a half-century of endemic tax evasion on a larger scale.
Meanwhile Venezuela's Association of Shopping Malls & Supermarkets has decided to throw in the towel on the extended strike-lockout which, initially, had been planned to take only three days. As it now reaches thirty days, the larger stores and fast-food restaurants have pledged to reopen "to ameliorate an atmosphere of unnecessary conflict" while the real motive is massive losses in missed Christmas and New Year sales.
